When Should You Replace Your HVAC System?

Though few people look forward to the process of replacing their entire HVAC system, even fewer people see the value of doing it before it actually fails completely. The most obvious answer to the question of when to replace your system then, is whenever it's necessary.

But even if it hasn't broken down (yet), there may still be reasons to spring for a new AC install, such as taking advantage of more energy-efficient models or noticing repairs that are getting more frequent. So if you have to replace your HVAC system, when is the best time of the year to do it?

If Possible, Perform an AC Install During the Off-Season

For HVAC technicians, the "off-season" for air conditioning units is normally between the beginning of September and the end of November. During this stretch, the hot summer temperatures are starting to wane but it hasn't gotten quite cold enough to warrant making other arrangements. Most homeowners find that they can manage a few days without a fully-functioning HVAC system, even if they have to make a few lifestyle adjustments or make arrangements for family members. The same kind of period also exists in late Spring, such as beginning of March to early May, but that can be a busy time for AC technicians as many homeowners are looking to perform maintenance inspections or pre-summer repairs that they weren't able to take care of the previous year.

Why Replace During the Off-Season?

Understanding that you should really only replace your entire HVAC system if you deem it necessary, there are a few advantages to doing an AC installation during the HVAC company's off-season. For starters, you're more likely to get it taken care of promptly, rather than waiting in line behind a bunch of emergency repairs that plague so many homeowners during the hot summer months. You're also able to schedule your AC install in advance and find the time that is most convenient for you.

In addition to scheduling opportunities, you might also take advantage of lower unit prices and installation costs. Since business is slower for everyone during these time periods, many HVAC companies are able to find parts for less and perform installations for even less too. Moreover, they may have more manpower available to do the AC install for you, which will make it a quicker process. If you're looking to replace your HVAC system, call your local AC company and ask about available dates during their off-season to get it done quickly and professionally.
