Are you sick of paying huge monthly bills during the summer? Does it seem like you are always turning off your air conditioner, just to try to save money? Instead of constantly sacrificing comfort in your own home, you can probably reduce your utility bills by making your HVAC system more efficient.

Many people think that the only solution is to use their air conditioner less, but there is a good chance that your air conditioner is simply less efficient than it used to be just because it is getting older. This doesn't necessarily mean that anything is technically wrong with your system. Regular HVAC maintenance is going to help maintain the efficiency of your system. One of the biggest problems with HVAC maintenance is that people forget to have it done. That is, simply having professionals come service your system is often enough. As a result, certain components start to become less efficient. Even just replacing your filters on time can ultimately elongate the lifespan of your furnace.

DIY Maintenance

Filter replacement is the one job that you can do yourself. Most filters need replaced every 3 to 9 months. It really depends on how often you use your furnace, the size of it, and the exact brand. Regardless, most homeowners don't have HVAC professionals come service their system more than once a year. So, even if your HVAC contractor does replace your furnace during every yearly visit, it probably won't be enough.

But, filter replacement is also very easy and there is no need to hire professionals to do such simple work. Most filters can be replaced without any tools. The filter is usually located on the outside of the furnace cabinet, within a small slot, so you can pull it out without any tools. Before you put your filter in place, check to see what the intended lifespan is. Set a reminder on your smart phone to replace your filter at least a week before the due date.

When it comes time to change your filter, if it looks especially dirty, you should set your next reminder for a shorter amount of time. Not all filters are going to last as long as they claim. Also, buy your filters in bulk so you always have them on hand so you can immediately replace them when necessary.

You should also visually check your filter on a regular basis to. Just pull it out, and replace it if it looks dirty.
