You may think that the leak from your air conditioning is just annoying, but it can actually mean something is wrong with your AC unit. Once you notice this happening don't ignore the problem. First, turn off your air conditioning because the water from these leaks can cause even more damage to your unit. Next, you will want to start investigating to find out where the leak is coming from. Here are four possible reasons your air conditioning is leaking.

Evaporator Coil is Frozen

The most common reason your evaporator coil is frozen is because the refrigerant is low. Low refrigerant causes the evaporator coil to become so cold it freezes. This is a problem you can hvae regardless of how hot or cold it is outside. You can fix the refrigerant issue by turning the air conditioner off and making sure your fan is set to auto, which allows the fan to melt the ice. Then, make sure you get your refrigerant refilled by a professional.

Clogged Air Filter

A clogged air filter can also cause issues with the evaporator coils. Some people overlook the air filter and do not change it as often as they should. A dirty air filter prevents sufficient ventilation of air, which causes many issues in the air conditioning system, including leaks. Depending on your type of AC system, it is best to replace your air filters either once a month or once every three months to keep everything running smoothly.

Problem with the Condensate Drain Pipe

Your condensate drain pipe can become clogged, which causes your air conditioning system's drain pan to overflow. Dirt and debris will combine with the water, causing a blockage which creates a mold and mildew problem. This can happen if you have a dirty evaporator coil as well.

Detached Drain Line

Sometimes your AC system's drain lines can become disconnected. This usually happens if the lines are installed poorly and the fittings are not fastened as securely as they should be. This causes the line to become disconnected from the air conditioner unit, which causes the leak.
